Discovering Ways To Win (Part 2) – Ps. George Mosena
Winning usually has nothing to do with where you start. Bad starts do not always mean that you cannot win in life. God wants you to win!
Whether you come from a dysfunctional family or abject poverty, you can still win in life. Your dysfunctional background does not matter, you can still win.
People who have bad starts can easily develop a “victim mentality”. You cannot win with a victim mentality.
Phillipians 3:13 (KJV) – Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Judges 11:1 (NKJV) – Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah. 2 Gilead’s wife bore sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall have no inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” 3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and dwelt in the land of Tob; and worthless men banded together with Jephthah and went out raiding with him. 4 It came to pass after a time that the people of Ammon made war against Israel. 5 And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6 Then they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon.” 7 So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me, and expel me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” 8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” 9 So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you take me back home to fight against the people of Ammon, and the Lord delivers them to me, shall I be your head?” 10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The Lord will be a witness between us, if we do not do according to your words.” 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
How To Overcome A Victim Mentality
- Get Over Your Past:
Your past is gone, do not dwell upon it. Get over whatever happened in the past. Do not habour bitterness and resentment. Jephtah fixed his eyes on the future and kept focussed on the prize. Don’t blame your past, it will not change.
– Joseph’s brothers rejected him (Genesis) but he ended up in the palace.
– Jesus was betrayed and beat but He conquered sin and saved the world.
- Learn To Live With Things You Cannot Change:
Where you come from does not determine who you are. Jephtah’s mother was a prostitute, there is nothing he could do to change that.
Accept the past and move on. Philippians 3:6-7 (NKJV) – concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
- Trust God With Your Future:
Jephtah trusted the Lord with what was about to happen even though he did not know how things would turn out.
- Don’t Look For Sympathy:
It is human nature to seek pity as much as we seek to be praised and affirmed. Stand up from the “Arggh shame” seat. Get up and do something.
- Sieze God-given Opportunities:
Judges 11:8 (NKJV) – And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” Do not lose God0-given opportunities because of bitterness. Believe God even if you do not believe in yourself.
- Let No-one Take Advantage Of You:
Do not let people use your past to exploit you or take advantage of you.
Do not try to be a people-pleaser in order to try and make up for your past.
- The Holy Spirit Will Empower You:
Judges 11:29 (NKJV) –Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon.
1 Samuel 10:11 (NKJV) –And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
When the Holy Spirit empowers you, you become transformed unstoppable.
- Stand In The Midst Of Your Criticizers:
Judges 12:1-3 (NKJV) – Then the men of Ephraim gathered together, crossed over toward Zaphon, and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you with fire!” 2 And Jephthah said to them, “My people and I were in a great struggle with the people of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not deliver me out of their hands. 3 So when I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hands and crossed over against the people of Ammon; and the Lord delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?” There are those who come to accuse you only after your victory.
When you come from a bad background, you are often marked and alienated.
Successful or not successful, YOU WILL BE CRITICIZED!
When you overcome your negative past, you can be in the “Hall of Fame” and listed with the great men of valour. Hebrews 11:32-34 (NKJV) – And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
You do not have to sit in the place of despair, God has a great plan for your life. It’s in your action that your miracle lies. God wants you to win! Change your attitude, change your mentality.
